Before you buy another AI tool, ask what happens to your people.
Finance and procurement leaders are being presented with an extraordinary number of AI solutions.
Every demonstration promises something, faster processing, lower costs, fewer manual tasks, greater accuracy, more automation.
And many of those promises may be entirely achievable.
But I wonder how often the people implications receive the same scrutiny as the financial business case. When evaluating an AI investment, organisations routinely ask:
What's the ROI?
How quickly can we implement?
How much will we save?
How many hours can we eliminate?
All reasonable questions, but perhaps we should also be asking:
What new skills will our people need?
Who will be responsible for developing them?
Which roles will change, and have we explained how?
What opportunities will this technology create for the people currently doing the work?
These shouldn't be questions we address after the technology has been purchased, they should be part of the investment decision itself, because buying AI technology and successfully adopting AI are two very different things.
One is a procurement decision, the other is an organisational transformation.
The best AI business case should explain what the technology delivers and what happens to the people alongside it.
For those involved in AI procurement, are workforce development and employee impact part of your supplier evaluation today?
